Happy 35th Birthday IDEA!“We want to encourage you to RSVP at your earliest convenience if you plan to attend the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act AS WE HAVE HAD A VERY LARGE RESPONSE.

Space is extremely limited.  RSVP is required. Seats will be reserved on a first come, first serve basis.

The event will be held on November 18, 2010, at three o’clock in the afternoon in the Kennedy Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office building in Washington, D.C.

In hosting this event, the Department of Education is bringing together leaders from the White House, Members of Congress and their staff, education leaders, advocates, educators, academics and government officials to celebrate and reaffirm our support for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and to honor the many and varied contributions of infants, toddlers and youths with disabilities, their parents, teachers, related services personnel and administrators.

When Public Law 94-142 was signed in 1975, this country committed itself to ensuring that children with disabilities have opportunities to develop their talents, share their gifts and contribute to their communities. That commitment endures today.

Countless lives have improved because 35 years ago, our lawmakers recognized the value of educating all children. Now it’s time to reflect on how far we’ve come, envision the future of IDEA and celebrate the millions of people who have enjoyed access to the services and education that lead to high-quality lives as a result of this law.

I’d like to offer a special thank you to the honorary sponsors of this event:  Senator Tom Harkin, Senator Michael Enzi, Representative George Miller and Representative John Kline.

To RSVP for this event, or if you have questions, please contact Melissa Storm at 202-403-5363 or via email at . We are committed to accessibility for all persons. Please let Melissa know by November 12, if you require accommodations.
