Are You Aware That?

Matt BarkleyEven though the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed over 20 years ago and was recently reauthorized to include more stringent employment related provisions, the U.S. Dept. of Labor’s disability employment statistics for August 2010 show that only 22% of people with disabilities in the labor force are employed? By comparison, the percentage of employed persons with no disability is over 70%.

October is recognized as Disability Employment Awareness Month. As we celebrate the accomplishments that have been made since the ADA passed, we must also see the continuing advocacy that we need to pursue to ensure that people with disabilities aren’t left behind again.
